James Alberione

Italian Catholic priest (1884–1971)

James Alberione, SSP (Italian: Giacomo) (4 April 1884 – 26 November 1971), was an Italian Catholic priest, and the founder of the Society of St. Paul, of the Daughters of St. Paul, of the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master, of the Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd, of the Sisters of Mary Queen of the Apostles, and other religious institutes, which form the Pauline Family. The first two groups are best known for promoting the Catholic faith through various forms of modern media.[1]

Early life

Alberione was born on 4 April 1884, in San Lorenzo di Fossano, Cuneo, then in the Kingdom of Italy. The Alberione family, made up of Michael Alberione, Teresa Allocco and their six children, were farmers. He was the fourth son of a peasant family and had a more delicate physical constitution than his brothers.[2] At the age of sixteen, James entered the seminary of Alba, Piedmont,[3] financially aided by his uncle James, his godfather from whom his name is derived. James was born on April 4, 1884, in San Lorenzo di Fossano (Cuneo), to Michele Alberione and Teresa Rosa Allocco, in a peasant family. At 16 years of age he entered the Seminary of Alba, where on the night between December 31, 1900, and January 1, 1901, he had a powerful experience of prayer in which he felt obliged to serve the Church and to do something for the Lord and for the people of the new century.  He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1907.  The Lord guided him toward a new undertaking, multifaceted in its means and structures: to preach the Gospel to all people, with the fastest and most efficacious means, in the spirit of the Apostle Paul.

Obedient to God and to the Church, on August 20, 1914, he began the Pauline Family in Alba with the foundation of the Society of Saint Paul.  This was followed over time by the foundations of four Congregations for women, which were different and independent from one another, each with its specific purpose, but convergent: the Daughters of Saint Paul, Sister Disciples of the Divine Master, Sisters of Jesus the Good She

Fr. James Alberione, Founder of the Pauline Family, was one of the most creative apostles of the 20th century. He was born in San Lorenzo di Fossano (Cuneo), Italy, on 4 April 1884 and baptized the following day. The profoundly Christian and hard-working Alberione family, made up of Michael and Teresa Allocco and their six children, were farmers.

Little James, the fourth child of the family, felt the call of God early in life. When questioned by his first-grade teacher as to what he wanted to be when he grew up, he replied, “I want to be a priest!”. His childhood years were directed to this goal.

When the Alberione family moved to Cherasco, in the Alba diocese, the parish priest of St. Martin's Church, Fr. Montersino, helped young James to reflect on God's call and respond to it. At the age of 16, James entered the seminary of Alba and immediately met Canon Francesco Chiesa, who would be his father, guide, friend and advisor over the next 46 years.

At the end of the Holy Year of 1900, James, who had read a
