Though she comes from the Pacific Northwest, the new executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, Miquela Craytor, is putting down roots in the Bronx.

Originally from Oregon, Craytor, 31, earned a master’s with honors in city and regional planning from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and fell in love with New York in the process.

Born to the children of Mexican immigrants and Dust Bowl farmers, with Native American heritage on both sides of her family, Craytor immediately identified with the diversity she found in America‘s original melting pot.

“That is what truly made my New York experience so amazing,” said Craytor, ” . . . the vast diversity of people, history and landscape.”

Craytor has already helped change the landscape in the South Bronx for the better as the deputy director of SSBx before her promotion to executive director last month when the group’s founder, Majora Carter, stepped down from that position to start a green consulting firm.

Suma is an entrepreneur and educator keenly interested in the intersection of entrepreneurship, innovation, and progress. She is CEO of Future Acres, a company building the farm tools of tomorrow, starting with an electric harvest companion robot. Suma also teaches the “Future of Food: Entrepreneurship as Activism” at NYC’s School of Visual Arts, and is building an entrepreneurial collective based on the principles of entrepreneurship as activism. Prior, Suma co-founded companies in vertical farming, waste management, and renewable energy. She started her career at a microfinance startup in India, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali. Suma also received the White House Champions of Change Award for her work in LGBTQ advocacy. She is a graduate of The Wharton School (MBA), Flatiron School (iOS), General Assembly (UX Design), and University of Rochester (BA).
