Not all Filipinos are aware of the historical importance of May 14.
On May 14, 1903, Aurelio Tolentino (October 13, 1867-July 3, 1915), a Pampango playwright, poet, essayist, educator, novelist and public servant was arrested because of his play, Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas (Larawan ng Inang Bayan).
Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas: a play of struggle vs. imperialist powers
It is an anti-imperialist play attacking the new colonizers (at that time), the Americans, while not forgiving the old ones – Mother Spain and Old China, who want to feast on the Philippines’ wealth.

In this Spanish name, the first or paternal surname is Tolentino and the second or maternal family name is Valenzuela.
Aurelio Tolentino y Valenzuela (October 15, 1869[1] – July 5, 1915) was a Kapampangan playwright, poet, journalist, and revolutionary.[2] His works at the turn of the 20th century depicted his desire to see Philippine independence from its colonizers. He was arrested twice, first by the Spaniards and later by American forces.[3] He wrote and directed the anti-imperialist play Nápun, Ngéni at Búkas (Kahapon, Ngayon at Bukas; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow), which led to his arrest in 1903.[4]
Early life and career
Tolentino was born in Santo Cristo, Guagua, Pampanga, he was the third and youngest child of Leonardo Tolentino and Patrona Valenzuela. Tolentino received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and read law at the University of Santo Tomas.[5]
