Biography

Lawrence Pressman was born David Milton Pressman in 1939 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. His father Joseph G. Pressman was a Russian Jew who fled Czarist Russia as a teenager and earned US citizenship through service in World War I. His mother Rose Pressman (nee Goldberg), whose family settled in Cynthiana after moving from New York City, was also of Jewish immigrant heritage. Together, his parents worked as successful retailers in Cynthiana, owning seven local department stores and three others in northeast Kentucky. Joseph would regularly take Lawrence and his three brothers to see Broadway plays, which fostered Lawrence’s interest in acting.

Pressman pursued his passion for acting at Northwestern University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Speech from the School of Speech in 1961. While at Northwestern, Pressman studied with associate professor Alvina Krause, whose undergraduate acting curriculum significantly contributed both to the field and to Northwestern’s national reputation for drama instruction. Lawrence Pressman (born David Milton Pressman; July 10, 1939) is an American actor. He is best known for roles on Doogie Howser, M.D., Ladies' Man, a recurring role on Profiler, the title character on Mulligan's Stew and as a fictional scientist in the 1971 film The Hellstrom Chronicle.

Career

His first role was on the soap operaThe Edge of Night, and one of his first movie starring roles was in Shaft (1971). Other film credits include Making It (1971), 9 to 5 (1980), The Hanoi Hilton (1987), Trial and Error (1997), Mighty Joe Young (1998) and American Pie (1999).

He has appeared in TV movies such as The Gathering, A Fighting Choice, Victims for Victims: The Theresa Saldana Story. Guest roles on American television series includes episodes of Hawaii Five-O, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Dawson's Creek, The Drew Carey Show, Law & Order, Matlock, Marcus Welby, M.D., Gilmore Girls, M*A*S*H, The West Wing, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Lawrence Pressman has been a busy guy since his first appearance on the daytime soap "The Edge of Night" in 1969, always able to bring a little class to a production no matter how big or small the role. In the 1970s he worked mostly in television, including small parts in popular crime dramas "Hawaii Five-O," "Barnaby Jones," and "The Streets of San Francisco." A versatile actor, he has also appeared in sitcoms "The Bob Newhart Show" and "M*A*S*H." He had a top role in the classic 1971 blaxploitation cop film "Shaft." His most notable film role during this period was entomologist Nils Hellstrom in the cult science fiction film "The Hellstrom Chronicle," a mix of fiction and documentary best remembered for its extraordinary cinematography.
