A legacy revived
At first, no one in the family could believe what they were hearing.
For more than a decade, St. Petersburg orthopedist Koco Eaton and his relatives had been talking with one film company after another, hoping to dramatize the life of Eaton's remarkable uncle, Vivien Thomas.
Thomas made medical history in 1944 by helping invent the first operation successfully performed on the heart, a procedure to cure "blue baby syndrome" by repairing a defect that reduces oxygen in an infant's blood.
That he accomplished this without a medical degree _ he was forced to leave college when the banks crashed in 1929 _ was an additional source of pride for Thomas' family. But for decades, the medical establishment resisted crediting Thomas for his knowledge and achievements.
By 2002, persistent producer Robert Cort had persuaded HBO to back a film on Thomas' life, and an all-star cast began to coalesce: Harry Potter co-star Alan Rickman would play Alfred Blalock, the head of surgery at Johns Hopkins University, who recognized Thomas' talent and became his longtime collabo

Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Koco Eaton of Eaton Orthopaedics in Florida
Koco Eaton, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Eaton Orthopaedics in the Tampa Bay area.
He specializes in sports medicine and currently serves as team physician for NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, MLB's Tamp Bay Rays and MLS' Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Dr. Eaton obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore before completing his fellowship in sports medicine under James Andrews, MD, at the American Sports Institute in Birmingham, Ala., and his orthopedic surgery residency at The Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.
His interest in sports medicine stems from his own athletic career, and he opened his practice to focus on treating sports injuries. His written work has been widely published and he serves as a teaching physician at Tampa, Fla.-based University of South Florida pediatric residency program in sports medicine.
