The word Ædnan means “land” in the Northern Sámi tongue. It can also mean “the earth” and “my mother.” In Linnea Axelsson’s beautiful novel in verse, she touches on all of these layers of meaning. The subtitle of the book - An Epic - opens up the expectation of a work of grandiose proportions. While the story is spread out over more than 400 pages, the writing is sparse, reading like a long string of haiku. The white space on the pages evokes the snowy, silent landscape of northern Sweden where the book takes place. These silences are as eloquent as the words that they surround.
The story begins in the spring of 1913. Ristin and her family are migrating their herd of reindeer from winter to summer pastures. The family is forced to separate due to confusion at the newly drawn border between Sweden and Norway. Her son Aslat dies in an accident and the family is forced by seasonal migration to abandon his grave.
