Pininfarina S.p.A. (; Italian:[pininfaˈrina]; short for Pininfarina Società per Azioni) is an Italian car design firm and coachbuilder, with headquarters in Cambiano, Turin, Italy. The company was founded by Battista "Pinin" Farina in 1930. On 14 December 2015, the Indian multinational Mahindra Group acquired 76.06% of Pininfarina S.p.A. for about €168 million.[2]
Pininfarina is employed by a wide variety of automobile manufacturers to design vehicles. These firms have included long-established customers such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Fiat, GM, Lancia, and Maserati, to emerging companies in the Asian market with Chinese manufactures like AviChina, Chery, Changfeng, Brilliance, JAC and VinFast in Vietnam and Korean manufacturers Daewoo and Hyundai.

Why are many convertibles also called spyders or spiders?
For years, many terms in the automotive world have been borrowed from the bygone era of horse-drawn carriages. Just think of terms like: caravan, landaulet, coachbuilt... The word 'Spyder' or 'Spider' seems to be one of them too.
Coachbuilders in the late 18th century built a light type of carriage with a small body as seating space and fitted large wooden wheels with thin spokes on them. The roof was removable and the windows could be folded down. Its shape somewhat resembled that of a spider. The body was appropriately named: 'Spider Phaeton'.
With the advent of the combustion engine, the carriages gradually disappeared from the street scene, but the name spider stuck. From then on, they were mainly used for small convertibles with large wheels. To this day, the basic concept of a spider is still recognisable. As with carriages, it is often about small light open vehicles meant for sporty driving.

Pinin started working in his brother Giovanni's body shop at the age of 12 and it was there that his interest in cars was born. He stayed at Giovanni's Stabilimenti Industriali Farina for decades, learning bodywork and beginning to design his own cars.
Battista formed Carrozzeria Pinin Farina in 1930 to focus on design and construction of new car bodies, and quickly gained prominence. Only Carrozzeria Touring was more sought-after in the 1930s. Battista's work for Ferrari, starting in 1952, would become his most famous, though much of it was managed by his son,
