Today a conversation with a legend—Joe De Leon Hernández, known as Little Joe—the King of Brown Sound and leader of one of the most popular Tejano groups in music history, “Little Joe y La Familia.” Little Joe has helped pioneer Tejano music, a mix of traditional Norteño, country, blues and rock styles, and is simply one of the most prominent figures in the tradition today.
Joining his cousin’s band when he was 13, Joe has been performing around the world for almost 70 years. He’s recorded 70 albums, nominated for a Grammy 11 times, and and he’s won five—the first in 1992, the last one in 2020—a testament not just to his longevity but his continuing significance in music. Tejano Legend Little Joe’s powerful story
Recently I had an opportunity to participate in a book discussion in San Antonio’s southside on a new biography, “¡No Llore, Chingón! An American Story – The Life of Little Joe,” about José Mária De León Hernández, known professionally as Little Joe.
The following day the famous Tejano singer and native Texan travelled from his home in Temple to join his biographer Emma González at the college to engage with the enthralled audience.

Little Joe (singer)
American tejano musician
Musical artist
José María De León Hernández (born October 17, 1940), known professionally as Little Joe, is an American tejano performer who was born and raised in Temple, Texas.[1]
Career
Little Joe is of Mexican descent. Hernández told the Stockton Record in 2015 that he was born "in a three-wall, dirt-floor garage ... on a cold stormy night," the seventh of 13 children. His father, Salvador, was known as "La Cotorra" (the parakeet) and was a troubadour. His mother, Amelia DeLeon, was a trained pianist. "My dad and aunts all played instruments and sang," he told the Riverside Press-Enterprise (Nov. 18, 2015). "We'd go to parties that would last until three in the morning."
Hernández got his start at 13 when his cousin, David Coronado, recruited him to play guitar for his Latinaires. The Latinaires eventually became known as Little Joe and the Latinaires. Today he is usually joined by his band La Familia.[i] In 1992, their album 16 de Septiembre earned the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-Ame
