James Spencer Lentz, long-time football coach and the first director of the Outing Club at Bowdoin College, died on July 22, 2009, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick. He was born on April 5, 1927, in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, the son of John S. Lentz, Jr. and Dorothy B. Lentz. An outstanding athlete, he graduated from Upper Darby High School and the Perkiomen School. He served in the U.S. Army Special Service division in 1945 and 1946 and was stationed for a time in Austria. He played football and was a boxer during his military career. Jim enrolled at Gettysburg College following his military service and graduated in 1951 as an economics major, a member of the wrestling team, and as captain of the football team. He received a master of arts degree in health and physical education from Columbia University in 1957. Jim began his coaching career at Gettysburg College in 1952 as the coach of the freshman football team and the swimming team. In 1956 he became the line coach of the football team. James Spencer Lentz (April 5, 1927 – July 22, 2009) was an American college football coach. He was the head football coach for Bowdoin College from 1968 to 1983.

Playing career

Lentz played college football as a tackle at Gettysburg.[1][2] During a game in his freshman season, he suffered a broken hand.[3] He also competed in wrestling.[4]

Coaching career

Following Lentz's graduation, he served as an assistant coach in 1951 for his alma mater, Gettysburg.[2][5][6] In 1952, he was promoted to a full-time position and was the freshman coach.[2][7][8] In 1952, his freshman team finished the season undefeated.[9] In 1956, he served as the line coach. In 1957, he was hired on the inaugural staff for newly hired Harvard head coach John Yovicsin as the offensive guard and centers coach.[10][11][12] In 1962, he was promoted to defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

Lentz spent half his life serving Bowdoin, becoming a symbol of leadership, dedication and compassion, as he coached his football players to within one point of an undefeated season, and grew the Outing Club into the largest student organization on campus. Former players and friends from Bowdoin and Harvard donated a large fieldstone hearth at the Schwartz Outdoor Leadership Center in his honor, and each year, the Outing Club recognizes student leaders with the James S. Lentz Leadership Award. He was born on April 5, 1927, in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, and prepared for college at Upper Darby High School and the Perkiomen School.
