Mantsho, which means a beautiful dark complexion in Sesotho, was established in 2005 by Palesa (Flower) Makubung after a four-year stint with iconic designer brand, Stoned Cherrie where she was lead designer.
Her abiding motto is a garment has to do something for your life.
A graduate of clothing production from the Vanderbijlpark Technical College, she has travelled extensively throughout Africa drawing inspiration from indigenous cultures and historically important black South Africans.
Mokubung zooms in on African materials and cleverly transforms them into modern and edgy designs incorporating fine silks and woven fabrics to end up with a 100% Mantsho garment. A true Mantsho garment can be identified by it’s confident and effortless silhouette, structure and quirkiness. These three elements work well to describe Mokubung’s knowledge of her craft. Shape is a big character of her design ethos she believes it stores a woman’s confidence.

Fashion coup for Palesa Mokubung
South African designer Palesa Mokubung has scored a huge international fashion collaboration - making history in the process.
The 37-year-old Kroonstad, Free State-born, designer, whose label is Mantsho, has partnered with Swedish chain store H&M - the first African designer to do so.
"This collaboration is a dream come true. This project has been a valuable journey so far and I cannot wait to share my passion and design with fashion lovers around the world," she said.
The collection will hit local stores as well as H&M's flagship stores in the US, the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Mexico, Chile and Israel on August 19. She joins a list of high-profile international fashion designers who have collaborated with the fast-fashion retailer, including Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander Wang, Moschino and Balmain and soccer legend David Beckham.

Palesa Mokubung is a South African citizen. She was born in Kroonstad, Free State and went to school in South Africa. Her personal details, including her birthday, are scarce. Palesa Mokubung age is approximately 38 years. The speculation is drawn from the knowledge that she completed her training in fashion at design in 2000 when she was only 19 years old. She studied at the Vanderbijlpark Technical College. In 2014, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Design.
Career
After completing her education, Palesa Mokubung secured a job with the renowned South African label, Stoned Cherrie. She became the top designer for the label. In 2004, she made her exit from Stoned Cherrie to start her own one. Palesa then founded Mantsho,
