Giacomo Leopardi was a 19th century Italian nobleman who was one of the leading lights in the Romantic poetry movement which was a part of the Age of Enlightenment. This was a period that began in the previous century, dominating intellectual and philosophical thinking across the whole of Europe. Leopardi was able to participate fully in this despite living in a remote part of Italy which was dominated by the rigours of the Catholic church. Beside writing a great deal of critically acclaimed lyrical poetry in his relatively short life he was also a renowned philologist and philosopher.
He was born Giacomo Taldegardo Francesco di Sales Saverio Pietro Leopardi on the 29th June 1798 in Recanati which is a town in the northern region of Marche. It was a noble family, his father being the Count Monaldo Leopardi, and everyone in that region adhered strictly to papal law. Giacomo Leopardi, Count (June 29, 1798 – June 14, 1837) is generally considered, along with such figures as Dante, Ariosto and Tasso, to be among Italy's greatest poets and also one of its greatest thinkers in general.Born in Recanati, Italy, he was a son of Monaldo Leopardi, a minor nobleman of a small village in Marches that at the time was ruled by the papacy. Giacomo's mother was the marquise Adelaide Antici Mattei.
His father was a weak, reactionary man, bound to antiquated ideas and prejudices, while his mother was a despotic, cold, religious fanatic who was obsessed with rebuilding the financial fortunes of the family, destroyed by the tragic gambling addiction of Monaldo. At home, the rigorous discipline of religion and savings reigned supreme. Giacomo's infancy, which he passed with his younger brothers Carlo and Paolino, left its mark on the poet, who recorded his experiences in the poem Ricordanze.

LEOPARDI, GIACOMO,Count (1798–1837), Italian poet, was born at Recanati in the March of Ancona, on the 29th of June 1798. All the circumstances of his parentage and education conspired to foster his precocious and sensitive genius at the expense of his physical and mental health. His family was ancient and patrician, but so deeply embarrassed as to be only rescued from ruin by the energy of his mother, who had taken the control of business matters entirely into her own hands, and whose engrossing devotion to her undertaking seems to have almost dried up the springs of maternal tenderness.
