Sir Robert Randolph GarranGCMG KC (10 February 1867 – 11 January 1957[1]) was an Australian lawyer who became "Australia's first public servant" – the first federal government employee after the federation of the Australian colonies. He served as the departmental secretary of the Attorney-General's Department from 1901 to 1932, and after 1916 also held the position of Solicitor-General of Australia.

This consignment includes texts of speeches and essays; poetry; diaries; notes on federation and the drafting of the constitution; correspondence while at the Attorney-General's Office; memoranda, reports and correspondence regarding the Paris Peace Conference, 1919; material on the Imperial Conferences, Indian Military Dedence Tribunal, 1932-1933; Garran's various activities after retirement in 1932 and varous legal matters. Also includes Andrew Garran's diaries, 1860-1901, notebooks, thesis, and press editiorials as well as general family correspondence and some diaries of Mary Isham Garran, Andrew's daughter. Details
Robert Randolph Garran was a lawyer and Commonwealth public servant. Garran was appointed first head of the Attorney-General's Department and parliamentary draftsman on 1 January 1901. Garran served the governments of ten prime ministers: Barton, Deakin, Watson, Reid, Fisher, Cook, Hughes, Bruce, Scullin and Lyons. He retired from the public service in 1932 after 31 years as head of the Attorney-General's department. He collaborated with John Quick in preparing The Annotated Constitution of the Australian Commonwealth (1901).
