Basque sculptor, painter, and printmaker Eudardo Chillida (formal name Eduardo Txillida Juantegui) was born on January 10, 1924, in San Sebastian, Spain. His early interest was in football, playing for the La Liga team of the Real Sociedad until he received a knee injury requiring five surgeries, effectively ending a promising goalie career. Switching gears in 1943, he enrolled at the University of Madrid, studying architecture for three years before abandoning architecture for art, moving to Paris and opening a studio. Eschewing formal academia, he took private lessons in clay and plaster sculpting techniques. He focused on figurative works in the style of the Old Masters whose sculptures he was exposed to at the Louvre and elsewhere. His first exhibition took place in the Salon de Mai at the Musee d'Art Moderne, followed the next year by participation in a show at Galerie Maeght, the first of several at the Parisian gallery.

On 28 July, he married Pilar Belzunce at the Ayete Parish, in San Sebastian.
They moved together to the Italian sculptor Genarelli’s house in Villaines-sous-Bois, close to Paris, where both Pablo Palazuelo and the sculptor Pablo Durrio happened to work too.
Two of his sculptures, Torso and Metamorfosis were selected by Louis Clayeux to be exhibited at Les main éblouies at the Galerie Maeght.
Torso, made of stone, is to date part of the Fondation Maeght’s permanent collection in Saint-Paul de Vence.

Eduardo Chillida Juantegui (Basque: Eduardo Txillida Juantegi; 10 January 1924 – 19 August 2002) was a Spanish Basque sculptor notable for his abstract works.
Early life and career
Born in San Sebastián (Donostia) to Pedro Chillida and the soprano Carmen Juantegui on 10 January 1924. Eduardo Chillida grew up near hotel Biarritz, which was owned by his grandparents.[1] Chillida had been the goalkeeper for Real Sociedad, San Sebastián's La Liga football team, where his knee was so seriously injured that he had five surgeries, ending a promising football career. He then studied architecture at the University of Madrid from 1943
